US checks do not include a tip, so you add it yourself. The common method is to apply the percentage to the pre-tax subtotal, divide by the number of people, and round each share up.
The result separates tax, tip, total bill and per-person share so the assumptions remain visible. Tipping on the after-tax total produces a slightly larger tip than tipping on the subtotal.
Local customs and service charges vary. A service fee is not always distributed to staff in the same way as a voluntary gratuity, so ask the business when the receipt is unclear.
Inputs are applied directly to standard finance formulas with monthly compounding where relevant. Results are estimates in the selected currency; they do not include every tax, fee, benefit, market event or local rule. Try a conservative and an optimistic case before making a decision.

Usually yes — tip on the subtotal before sales tax. This calculator does the same.
Many restaurants add an 18–20% gratuity for parties of six or more. In that case no extra tip is expected.
Write the tip on the receipt's tip line and total it yourself. The round-up toggle makes the per-person number easy.
