Prices are tracked by the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U). Pick an amount and two years, and this converts between them using annual average CPI — showing total inflation, the average annual rate, and how the amount grew year by year. It works in both directions: what 1990 dollars are worth now, or what today's dollars would have bought then.
The conversion multiplies the amount by the ratio of target-year CPI to starting-year CPI. Total inflation describes the full price-level change, while the annualized rate expresses the same change as a compounded yearly average.
CPI-U is a national average basket and may differ from personal inflation dominated by rent, medical care, education or a particular city. Annual averages also smooth large changes within a year.
Inputs are applied directly to standard finance formulas with monthly compounding where relevant. Results are estimates in the selected currency; they do not include every tax, fee, benefit, market event or local rule. Try a conservative and an optimistic case before making a decision.

CPI is a national average basket. Housing, healthcare, tuition and childcare have risen faster than the overall index in many cities.
